Don’t teach your girls

Don’t teach your girls to be caring
If you’re teaching your boys to be carefree

Don’t teach your girls to cook
If you’re telling your boys what’s more important is a book

Don’t teach your girls to love
If you’re not teaching your boys how to respect true love

Don’t give your girls an education
If it’s only your boys that your pushing for a career

Don’t teach your girls that they’re equal
If you’re showing your boys how to look down

Don’t bring your girls up with dreams and hopes
If you’re going to bring up boys who are going to stop them from coming true.

  1. Reminds me of Nirvana’s Been A Son:

“She should have stayed away from friends
She should have had more time to spend
She should have died when she was born
She should have worn the crown of thorns

She should have – been a son
She should have – been a son
She should have – been a son
She should have – been a son

She should have stood out in the crowd
She should have made her mother proud
She should have fallen on her stance
She should have had another chance

She should have – been a son
She should have – been a son
She should have – been a son
She should have – been a son”

  2. PROFOUNDLY true ,your poem should be framed in every hose in the 3rd. world countries SPECIALLY IN MUSLIM COUNTRIES.Double standard is the reason for their stone age mentality .IF A PARENTS LOVE THEIR CHILDREN THEN THEY MUST TREAT THEM EQUALLY .LACK OF INTELLIGENCE IS THE GREATEST POVERTY.JMS

    1. Thanks for stopping by and appreciating my poems… it’s an issue in many countries and cultures so I don’t want to specifically mention one.
But your last line hit the nail on the head… so true “lack of intelligence is the greatest poverty”
