The Alchemist

“The Alchemist is a novel by Paulo Coelho first published in the year 1988. Originally written in Portuguese by its Brazilian-born author, it has been translated into at least 56 languages as of September 2012.”

So after hearing several good reviews about the book, I read it… and what a read it is. I am so sure that it has subconsciously made me a much more relaxed and optimistic person. Know matter how long you take I really believe it’s a book that everyone should read, if you’d prefer a free e-book read please follow the link below:

I want to share some of the lines from the book that really hit home;

“It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.”

“When someone sees the same people everyday, they wind up becoming a part of that person’s life.  And then they want the person to change.  If someone isn’t what others want them to be, the others become angry.  Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.”

“At a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what’s happening to us, and our loves become controlled by fate.  That’s the world’s greatest lie.”

Destiny – “It’s what you have always wanted to accomplish.  Everyone, when they are young knows what their destiny is.  At that point in their lives everything is clear and everything is possible.  They are not afraid to dream, and to yearn for everything they would like to see happen to them in their lives.  But, as time passes,a  mysterious force begins to convince them that it will be impossible for them to realise their destiny.”

“He had to choose between something he had become accustomed to and something he wanted to have.”

“Making a decision was only the beginning of things.  When someone makes a decision, he is really diving into a strong current that will carry him to places he had never dreamed of when he first made the decision.”

“The closer one gets to realising his destiny, the more that destiny becomes his true reason for being.”

“Everyone has their own way of learning things.  His way isn’t the same as mine, nor mine as his.  But we’re both in search of our destines, and I respect him for that.”

“If I have to fight, it will be just as good a day to die as any other.  Because I don’t live in either my past or my future.  I’m interested only in the present.  If you can concentrate always on the present, you’ll be a happy man… Life will be a party for you, a grand festival, because life is the moment we’re living right now.”

“Don’t be impatient.  Eat when it’s time to eat, and move along when it’s time to move along.

“… he learned the most important part of the language that all the world spoke – the language that everyone on earth was capable of understanding in their heart.  It was love.  Something older than humanity, more ancient than the desert.  Something that exerted the same force whenever two pairs of eyes met… when two such people encounter each other, and their eyes meet, the past and the future become unimportant.  There is only that moment… Without such love, one’s dreams would have no meaning.”

“It’s not what enters men’s mouths that’s evil.  It’s what comes out of their mouths that is.”

“When a person really desires something, all the universe conspires to help that person to realise this dream.”

“Tell your heart that the fear if suffering is worse than the suffering itself.  And no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams.”

“Before a dream is realised, the Soul of the World tests everything that was learned along the way.  It does this not because it is evil, but so that we can, in addition to realising our dreams, master the lessons we’ve learned as we’ve moved towards that dream. – The darkest hour of the night came just before the dawn.”

“When you possess great treasures within you, and try to tell others of them, seldom are you believed.”

“Mostly just the hearts of those who are trying to realise their destinies.  But they do help children, drunkards, and the elderly too.”

“Your eyes show the strength of your soul.”

“Don’t give in to your fears, if you do, you won’t be able to talk to your heart.”

“When you are loved, you can do anything in creation.  When you are loved, there’s no need at all to understand what’s happening, because everything happens within you.”

“Because when we love, we always strive to become better than we are.”

“Life really is generous to those who pursue their destiny.”
